This weekend NASCAR went back down south to Darlington Raceway for throwback weekend the Goodyear 400. There were a ton of different old paint schemes, stories, and interesting facts about each of the cars this weekend. NASCAR is quickly approaching the halfway point in the season and many experienced drivers in good cars were still looking for their first win on the year. It was another interesting race on Sunday for Mother’s day so let’s recap what went down at Darlington Motor Speedway.
Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick led the field to green on Sunday with NASCAR’s new qualifying formula. Just seven laps in Aric Almirola spun around and wrecked his flaming number 10 car which ended his day. Around the competition caution, one of the front runners Kyle Busch had a tire go down bringing out the caution. After pitstops, Martin Truex Jr’s car came to life he stormed to the front and won yet another stage one to start the race off. Shortly after stage two was underway, Cole Custer wrecked in a similar fashion to Almirola earlier and totaled his car to end his day. The cautions came in waves when Kurt Busch hit the inside wall and his car caught fire and was forced to retire from the race.
Truex Jr. continued to dominate the race and won stage two easily over Kyle Busch by a whopping 14 seconds. The third stage was mostly straight forward with some shifting of positions and only around 20 cars on the lead lap. The race calmed down a bit and Truex just continued to dominate the race. Kyle Larson made a late charge but it was just not enough to oust Truex Jr. who took his third win on the year. Keselowski had a tough race finishing 24th, Kyle Busch recovered to finish 3rd, and points leader Denny Hamlin finished 5th. Kevin Harvick finished sixth and was followed in seventh by defending champion Chase Elliott. Truex led a whopping 248 of 293 laps on the day.
