Welcome back to another NASCAR recap and this week it was the Buschy McBusch 400 at Kansas Motor Speedway. NASCAR was looking forward to a good race with the 550 Horsepower Package and coming off of Talladega was a change of pace. Many of the top mile and a half racers started near the back due to the new qualifying format since some drivers wrecked out in Talladega. Let’s get into the recap and go over what happened on Sunday.
Brad Keselowski the most recent winner and the runner-up William Byron led the field to the green flag on Sunday. Keselowski jumped out to the early lead while some of the racers in the back worked their way to the front. Kyle Larson was one of those drivers who started 32nd due to engine issues last week in Talladega. The new format takes into account the finishing position and since Larson finished dead last he started near the rear for this race. Larson wasted no time working his way to the front and after the competition caution dominated the first stage. Near the end of stage one, Kyle Busch’s car came to him taking the stage one win. Going into the second stage Larson found his groove and dominated stage two for the win. Joey Logano struggled all day after starting 29th and having tire issues which he finished 17th.
Denny Hamlin’s car came to him as well after starting 20th and running in the top five the rest of the race. A late caution for a loose tire bunched the field back up and Hamlin took control. Hamlin was looking good for his first win until with under 30 laps left slammed into the wall after misjudging a corner. Another late-race spin saw Ricky Stenhouse Jr wreck with 15 laps to go bunched the field up again but the cautions didn’t stop there. With 10 to go Christopher Bell spun coming out of turn four and took out Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for good after surviving his first spin. A green-white-checkered restart finish saw Kyle Busch take the win on his birthday. Busch took advantage of Larson getting Ryan Blaney loose and was able to coast to the win. Kevin Harvick finished 2nd but still has no win along with Chase Elliot and Denny Hamlin. Hamlin finished 12th, Chase Elliot finished 5th, and Logano finished 17th for a few notabales. Kyle Busch’s win was the tenth different driver to win this season which makes the road to the playoffs interesting.
